See, that’s why people of color need more representation in the media. Since Black and brown kids aren’t seen as relate-able, to kids who grow up in all white neighborhoods we’re like strangers and a lot of them can’t empathize with us. When little black girls are killed or kidnapped it’s less likely to show up on the news, and if it does it’s briefly and locally and that’s it, it won’t be national news. People don’t care if they aren’t white. Don’t you remember when people said Rue’s death in the Hunger Games was less sad because she was Black? We learn to relate to white kids, we have to because that’s what we see growing up, but they never learn to relate to us. If the news were my only source, I’d think that Black kids never get kidnapped or murdered. When a bunch of white kids get killed in Sandy Hook, everyone sobs. When Black kids are killed because of police brutality or gang violence in Detroit or Chicago, no one cares.
